what women want

TALBY & HIS MOM
TALBY'S ANGELS

'ello there, lads & lassies.
i hopped out of the shower to a text from jay requesting that i guest post the talby tuesday today.
(at the eleventh hour, but, hey, jay really wants to keep up with the high demands of his faithful readers.)
i'm jay's wife, lissa, by the way, & i'm honored to share some tales about the icon himself.

let me preface this by saying that jay has some fantastic friends.
my life has honestly been touched by each & every one of them.
we're so blessed & thankful that our friends are like family.

that being said, talby has always been one of my favorites.
it was like that from the beginning of my freshman year.
talbs has been the favorite of many other women, as well.
you see, somehow, talby always has a lovely lady on his arm.
that seems to baffle the other men.

that's why i'm here...
to crack the case on what women want
& to explain why talby always is so popular with the ladies.

let me set one thing straight: talby is no player.
he doesn't just date to date or lead women on because he can.
he's a gentlemen & always seems to attract some quality women.

this, my friends, is why:
1. talby is sincere, loyal, & enthusiastic.
2. talby is confident in who he is.
(and, let's be honest, he's quite the man to take
the weekly jests on this post and the regular scoffing
in real life with such stride. props, t-man, props.)
3. talby don't hide what he got.
(case in point: playing the video of himself starring
as gaston in beauty & the beast in the lobby of the dorms.)
4. the guy can cook a mean onion omelet. 'nuff said.
5. talby is sensitive and kind-hearted.
(he had the sweetest things to say about our wedding on his
blog - yes, folks, he had his own blog! - and picked up on
things that had taken a lot of time & consideration. i think this
may be related to the sweet relationship he has with his mom.)
6. talby knows that a southern accent woos the ladies.
(even if he's just from "the promised land", pennsylvania.)
7. talby knows how to use various camping equipment in casual environments.
(see: head lamp story previously posted.)
8. talbs is shareful.
(like all the times he shared his hair buzzer with jay in college.)
9. talby is supportive.
(as jay mentioned in a previous post, he was always the first one
to congratulate someone else and share in their excitement.)
10. talby is rugged.
(flannels, scruff, & boots. need i say more?)

the case has been cracked. just call me nancy drew.

here's to tuesday and talby!!

talby tuesday

Yes, today is tuesday and you all know what that means..... The first actual Talby Tuesday. Well, if no one else is excited about Talby Tuesday (I doubt this is the case) I know one person for sure who is. Talby. Yesterday, as I was watching the Wisconsin/ Oregon game with my wife, my cell phone received a text message from Talbott reading, "Bro, do you know what tomorrow is?" Yes, Talbot was texting me about his own blog, making sure that I did not forget to write about him. Also, much to the dismay of many, this post is coming late in the day. It is now 5:15. I know that many of you have probably been checking in on the blog and checking Facebook to see if there is a new post up. But there was only one person who actually called me. Yep, you guessed it... Talby. I had one missed called from Aaron at 11:15am. Talby really likes his own blog.
Well, Talby, I will give you what you have been waiting so long for. Today is going to be a little more Talby history. First, why he is called Talby. Second, how we became so obsessed with Talby.
So why is Aaron called Talby? This is not much different from his last name, so it might not seem like a very witty nick name. But there is a story. Aaron is from a suburb outside of Pittsburgh. I happen to have grown up just miles from Aaron's house. Therefore, I know where Talby is from. However, despite being raised in a middle-class suburb, Talby is dead set on insisting that he is a red-neck, southerner, and a cowboy. He own many flannels, cowboy hats, and John Wayne memorabilia. Talby thinks that his life is so similar to the great country Western movie star that he named his new dog Duke (John Wayne's nickname). I picked up on Talbot's desire to be a country boy, right away at college. I would often joke him about it and remind him of his true identity. One time our football team had a road trip up to New York for a football game and we had a lot of time in the bus. I started calling Talbot, Talby the Cowby. I know it doesn't really rhyme or make sense, but it was funny at the time and it made him mad. I made up a song to go along with it and sang it with this obnoxious slow southern accent. Talby was so mad that he told severely people how "not funny" I was and vowed to punch me if I didn't stop. And, from those moments, on the nickname Talby stuck.

The other thing that I wanted to touch upon today is how huge Talby is. Talby is a mammoth of a man in plain dress and when he gets his football pads on he basically looks like Paul Bunyan playing football. This truth was confirmed by my sister one Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh. We had just lost a close football game and was riding home with my parents. After talking about the game my sister could not control herself any longer and excitedly asked Lissa, "Who is number 56? He's HUGE!" She didn't know so they asked me. I said, "Oh that is Talby." She replied, "He is seriously huge! I mean, he is just so thick!" Yep, all those arm bands and the ridiculous cowboy collar made Talby out to be a Giant. Talby, of course, loved this story. So, from that point on, whenever we talk about Talby, we always use this deep voice and say stuff like, "My name is Aaron and I am soooooo huge, nobody is as big as me. My cowboy collar is so sweet." These were the beginnings of Talby folklore. So, the big lesson to learn from Talby today is, even if you are a suburbian cake eater, you can still paint yourself as a gritty country boy. Just make sure that your crowd does not know where you are truly from. It makes it a harder sell and you might earn yourself a nickname that you will never lose.

the manliest man I know

After several complaints due to my inactivity, I am proud to finally provide my many devoted fans and lone subscriber (Thanks Jarrett!) with my much anticipated first post. When I thought about what I should write about, I decided that my best option was to do a feature on the manliest man that I know. His name is Aaron Talbott (Talby). There seems to be an infinite number of Talby stories and some of them have progressed from historical fact to exaggerated tale to total myth. It is not my purpose to exhaust all of those tales and separate fact from fiction. There will be a time for that. I simply want to introduce him to man-cave nation by telling you about his rugged roots and just how I came to meet this grizzly man.

It was the first week of football camp at Grove City College. I was a Junior at the time and there were several new freshmen in the locker room. I had previously heard from a friend at Church that she knew someone coming to Grove City to play football. His name was Aaron Talbott. Because his name was near the end of the alphabet, we shared the same row of lockers. As I was headed to my locker to put away my pads, I saw a burly young man crouched down, hat tilted almost sideways on his head with a ridiculous crease in it, using a screw driver to attach a cowboy collar to his shoulder pads. I introduced myself to him and was pleasantly surprised to see that despite his rough and tumble exterior, Talby was actually a nice and outgoing individual. I shook his hand, (It was like shaking a bear's paw) and that was the beginning...

The two pictures on this blog are of Talby before I met him. From what I hear, he was and still is a legend at Bethel Park. He was an all conference linebacker/linemen, who was infamous for clearing out Pizza Hut buffet's with his linemen buddies. Check out this article about high school Talby. He was a weightlifter/ wrestler who was also not afraid to dabble in acting as he played Gaston in his high school musical Beauty and the Beast. Truly, he is a Renaissance man.
These introductory stories about Talby can teach all men everywhere a few lessons on what it means to be a real man. 1.) If you are going to play football.... wear a neck roll. It makes you look big and intimidating. 2.) You don't need to be mean. Talby is a true Southern Gentlemen and 3.) A real man is diverse. He can play football and act. He can lift weights while wearing puka shells and gelling his hair. He can wear flannel but also pull off a bow tie.
This is the first of many Talby tributes. Please look forward to Talby Tuesdays.
